Background of the Study
Maternal education plays a crucial role in shaping the health outcomes of infants. It influences a mother’s ability to access healthcare services, follow recommended health practices, and make informed decisions regarding nutrition, hygiene, and preventive care. Studies have shown that higher levels of maternal education are associated with improved infant health outcomes, including lower rates of neonatal mortality and better growth and development (Adebowale & Nwachukwu, 2024).
In Kano State, a region with a diverse population and varying access to education and healthcare, maternal education is a critical factor in determining infant health. Despite recent improvements in education and healthcare access, significant disparities still exist between rural and urban areas, with many women in rural Kano having limited formal education. The impact of maternal education on infant health outcomes in this context warrants thorough examination, particularly to identify strategies to enhance maternal education and improve infant health in both urban and rural settings.
Statement of the Problem
In Kano State, maternal education levels vary significantly, which may contribute to disparities in infant health outcomes. Understanding the relationship between maternal education and infant health is essential for designing interventions that promote better health practices and improve healthcare delivery. However, there is a lack of detailed studies examining how maternal education specifically impacts infant health in the context of Kano State.
Objectives of the Study
To explore the relationship between maternal education and infant health outcomes in Kano State.
To assess how maternal education influences health-seeking behaviors and infant care practices.
To recommend strategies for improving maternal education and its impact on infant health.
Research Questions
What is the relationship between maternal education and infant health outcomes in Kano State?
How does maternal education affect health-seeking behaviors and care practices for infants in Kano State?
What strategies can be implemented to improve maternal education and, by extension, infant health in Kano State?
Research Hypotheses
Higher maternal education levels are associated with better infant health outcomes in Kano State.
Maternal education influences health-seeking behaviors, leading to improved care and health outcomes for infants.
Improving maternal education will enhance infant health by increasing knowledge and promoting better healthcare practices.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on mothers with children under five in Kano State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and analysis of health outcomes. Limitations include the challenge of addressing educational disparities and the potential for biases in self-reported data.
Definitions of Terms
Maternal Education: The level of formal education attained by a mother, which can influence her health knowledge and decision-making regarding infant care.
Infant Health Outcomes: The health status of infants, including measures such as infant mortality rates, nutritional status, and incidences of diseases.
Health-Seeking Behaviors: Actions taken by mothers to access healthcare services for their infants, including vaccination, treatment for illnesses, and preventive measures.
